Meet Reverend Monsignor Joubran Bou Merhi

For over three decades, Father Joubran Bou Merhi has been a constant presence for Catholic patients seeking spiritual solace and anointing. Since 1990, when he first took on the additional responsibility of hospital ministry alongside his parish duties, this role quickly transformed into a profound calling. Though he has now retired from his position as Pastor of St. Jude Maronite Catholic Church after more than 32 years, his dedication to hospital ministry remains unwavering. Father Joubran describes his approach as "meeting people where they are at," offering prayer, a listening ear, or the Sacraments as needed, without ever inquiring about their health condition. His ministry is purely focused on their spiritual well-being.

“Even during the COVID years – when most religious leaders were avoiding hospitals – Father Joubran came. And he came at any hour. I remember him coming at around one a.m. to provide the Sacrament of the Sick to a man in his 30s, as he was dying in the ICU. For his soon-to-be widow, the peace he provided literally meant the world.”

- Rev. Nancy Cormack-Hughes

Fr. Joubran consistently expresses deep appreciation for the professionalism and compassion of the ECS Spiritual Care department and demonstrated by its chaplains, particularly during his visits to St. Mark's Hospital. He highly values the chaplains' effective communication, attentiveness, and respectful approach to all traditions, noting that their presence makes patients feel very welcoming.

“The spiritual comfort that Father Joubran provides to patients and staff is beyond measure.
— Rev. Cormack-Hughes

When asked about his involvement in this community partnership, Fr. Joubran emphasizes the significance of being requested, stating, “It means a lot to be requested. Honestly, if I only have a few days to live, and you call me, I will come.” And, he adds, “I appreciate being thanked” which ECS chaplains do. “Thanking me is like giving me a million dollars.”

ECS is grateful for Fr. Joubran's years of service and ongoing commitment to the patients and families of St. Mark's Hospital and the broader community. His dedication, sensitivity, and profound faith have fostered a remarkable partnership in spiritual care in the wider Millcreek community of Salt Lake City where St. Mark’s Hospital is located, and beyond.
