Remembering Chaplain Susan Richey: A Life Dedicated to Compassionate Care
Susan Louise Richey, who passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, embodied the transformative power of spiritual care. Beginning her career as a nurse in cancer care and cardiac units, Susan later discovered her true calling through Clinical Pastoral Education with Rev. Lincoln Ure at St. Mark's Hospital.
For 15 years, Susan served as a hospice chaplain, finding the work "a very profound experience." Her deep spiritual beliefs, nurtured through years of Bible study and active service at Cottonwood Presbyterian Church, guided her ministry to those facing life's most challenging moments.
Even after retiring to Colorado, Susan continued serving others through volunteer work including the hospital ethics committee at Yampa Valley Medical Center. Her family remembers her for "her total devotion to her family, her belief in God, her service to others, and her dedication to helping those who are struggling."
Honoring Susan's Legacy
At Susan's memorial service, her husband Dale honored her passion for chaplaincy by inviting Rev. Nancy Cormack-Hughes to speak and requesting that memorial donations be made to the Lincoln Ure Educational Fund. This fund continues Susan's commitment to training future chaplains who will carry forward her legacy of compassionate care.
